How we use cookies

The Data Protection Act 1998, was re-appealed as a result of an EU directive designed to protect internet users’ privacy. The directive states that sites must provide “clear and comprehensive” information about the use of cookies – small files which allow a site to recognise a visitor’s device. The repeal for the Data Protection Act 1998 was given Royal Assent in 2018, to include the directly applicable directive, which is now domestic law.

Therefore, to fall into line with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR, all websites must:

  • Tell people that the cookies are there
  • Explain what the cookies are doing
  • Obtain visitors’ consent to store a cookie on their device
  • Make sure the information needs is upfront.

Therefore, the Lilliput Doll & Toy Museum website will, from 7th December 2018, clearly display information on the home page regarding our use of cookies which a website user will need to accept.

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your website preferences.

One such basic example could be your preference to have a particular website ‘remember’ your username and password, so that you do not need to enter this information on each visit. Contrary to popular belief, the website does not actually ‘remember’ this information, but it places a small cookie file onto the user’s hard disk drive which will ‘recognise’ each time you visit the website. This is why, upon clearing your Internet history and cache settings, you will often need to re-enter previously remembered information, just like you are visiting that website for the first time. There are many other examples of what cookie files can do.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about web page traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website, by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.
